Seifert Replaces Ravindra and Chapman: What Changes for New Zealand's ODI XI?

Clarification, first: Tim Seifert did not replace Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman on his own. Seifert was promoted from last-two ODIs only to all five ODIs, but New Zealand also added Henry Nicholls for the first three ODIs, Dean Foxcroft for the last two ODIs, and Matt Fisher for the whole series.

Seifert is the headline change, because he is in for all five ODIs, and because he opened in the 1st ODI in Auckland on 4 November and top-scored with 38 off 43. But the full change is a squad reshuffle, not a one-for-one swap.

This piece explains what Ravindra and Chapman did, what Seifert, Nicholls, Foxcroft and Fisher do, and what changes for New Zealand's ODI XI in the first three ODIs and the last two.

What happened on 2 November

On 2 November 2026, New Zealand Cricket ruled Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman out of the whole five-match ODI series against India.

  • Rachin Ravindra, right shoulder. Ravindra dislocated his right shoulder during a promotional shoot. He still cannot field comfortably at full white-ball capacity, and NZC noted the later Test series as a factor in managing him carefully. Ravindra has not been ruled out of the Tests. Do not present him as out of the Tests.
  • Mark Chapman, left hamstring. Chapman injured his left hamstring during the European T20 Premier League. An MRI showed at least two more weeks' rehabilitation from 2 November, taking him past the ODI series end on 15 November.

Both Ravindra and Chapman were already sidelined for the T20I leg, which New Zealand lost 3-2, and they were ruled out of all five ODIs on 2 November, superseding the original squads announced on 11 October 2026, in which Ravindra was in the first-three squad and Chapman was in both squads.

The replacements, announced on 2 November, were:

  • Tim Seifert, originally last-two ODIs only, now in for all five ODIs.
  • Henry Nicholls, recalled for ODIs 1 to 3, after 119 for Canterbury vs Wellington.
  • Dean Foxcroft, added for ODIs 4 to 5, after New Zealand A's red-ball series vs India A.
  • Matt Fisher, originally last-two ODIs only, now in for the whole series, as extra seam cover.

Matt Henry had joined the squad, with fitness still to be assessed, after a low-grade tear in his right quadriceps that ruled him out of the last three T20Is.

What Ravindra and Chapman did for New Zealand

Ravindra and Chapman are not the same type of player, and losing both hurts New Zealand in different ways.

Rachin Ravindra is a left-handed opener and all-rounder, who bowls left-arm spin. He is a player who can bat at the top, bowl 10 overs, and field well. In ODIs, Ravindra is a platform-setter at the top, like Devon Conway, but with spin as well. Losing Ravindra means New Zealand lose a left-handed opener, a spin option, and a player who can bat long.

Mark Chapman is a left-handed middle-order batter, who bats at No. 4 or No. 5, and who can hit sixes in the middle overs. He is a player who can accelerate after the platform is set, and who can play spin well. Losing Chapman means New Zealand lose a left-handed middle-order batter, and a player who can score quickly in overs 11 to 40.

Together, Ravindra and Chapman gave New Zealand left-handed balance at the top and in the middle, and they gave Santner two extra bowling options, Ravindra's spin and Chapman's part-time spin.

Losing both means New Zealand are more right-handed, with Seifert, Young, Nicholls, Mitchell, Latham and Phillips all right-handed, except for Santner, who is left-handed but bats at No. 7. That makes New Zealand easier to bowl to for India's spinners, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, who can bowl to right-handers without changing their line.

What Seifert changes: opener, keeper, and T20 form

Tim Seifert is the biggest change, because he is in for all five ODIs, and because he is a different type of player from Ravindra and Chapman.

Seifert is a right-handed wicketkeeper-batter, who opens in T20Is and who can open in ODIs. He is not a left-handed opener like Ravindra, and he is not a middle-order batter like Chapman. He is an opener who scores quickly.

Seifert's T20I form in New Zealand in October-November 2026 was excellent. He made 93 off 50 in Hamilton on 1 November, with 11 fours and 5 sixes, in New Zealand's 195 for 3 in 18 overs, chasing 192, and winning by 7 wickets. That was his best T20I innings in the series, and it showed he could open and score quickly.

In the 1st ODI in Auckland on 4 November, Seifert replaced the concussed Devon Conway as opener, opening with Will Young, and made 38 off 43 balls, before being caught by substitute Ruturaj Gaikwad off Gurnoor Brar. That was New Zealand's top score in the match, as New Zealand were bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs.

Seifert's 38 off 43, strike rate 88.37, was not a T20 innings. It was an ODI innings, with Seifert building a platform, not hitting from the first ball. He added 33 for the third wicket with Daryl Mitchell, who made 28, after Young was out for 9 and Nicholls was out for 9.

Seifert changes New Zealand's ODI XI in three ways:

  1. He opens, not Ravindra. Ravindra would have opened with Conway, or with Young. Seifert opens with Young, if Conway is out, or with Conway, if Conway is fit. Seifert is a right-handed opener, not a left-handed opener, so the opening pair is right-right, not left-right.
  2. He keeps, as a second keeper. Seifert is a wicketkeeper, like Tom Latham, who is New Zealand's first-choice keeper in the first three ODIs. Seifert gives Santner a second keeper option, if Latham is injured, or if Santner wants to play Seifert as a specialist batter and Latham as keeper.
  3. He scores quickly, but not as quickly as in T20s. Seifert's T20 strike rate is high, but his ODI strike rate will be lower, around 90 to 100, because ODIs are longer and the bowling is different. His 38 off 43 in Auckland is a normal ODI innings for Seifert, not a T20 innings.

What Nicholls changes: No. 3, and a right-handed middle order

Henry Nicholls was recalled for ODIs 1 to 3, after making 119 for Canterbury vs Wellington.

Nicholls batted at No. 3 in the 1st ODI in Auckland, and made 9 off 11 balls, caught by Naman Dhir off Arshdeep Singh.

Nicholls is a right-handed batter, who bats at No. 3 or No. 4, and who can build an innings. He is not a left-handed batter like Ravindra or Chapman, and he is not a power-hitter like Seifert. He is a platform-setter, like Conway, but right-handed.

Nicholls changes New Zealand's XI by giving them a No. 3 who can bat long, if Conway is out, or a No. 4 who can bat with Mitchell, if Conway is fit.

In Auckland, New Zealand's top order was Seifert, Young, Nicholls, Mitchell, Latham, Phillips, Santner. That is seven right-handed batters in a row, except for Santner at No. 7, who is left-handed. That is a very right-handed top order, and it is a direct result of losing Ravindra and Chapman, both left-handed.

What Foxcroft and Fisher change: last two ODIs, and bowling cover

Dean Foxcroft was added for ODIs 4 to 5, after New Zealand A's red-ball series vs India A. Foxcroft is a batter who can bowl, and he will be in the last-two squad, with Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Mitch Hay and Nick Kelly.

Foxcroft changes the last-two XI by giving Santner a middle-order batter who can bowl, in place of Ravindra and Chapman, who are both out for the whole series. Foxcroft is not a like-for-like replacement for either, but he is a player who can bat and bowl, and who has played against India A.

Matt Fisher was extended from last-two ODIs only to the whole series, as extra seam cover. Fisher is a seamer who can bat a little, and he gives Santner an extra bowling option, if Henry is injured, or if a seamer is expensive.

Fisher did not play in the 1st ODI in Auckland. New Zealand's confirmed XI in Auckland was Seifert, Young, Nicholls, Mitchell, Latham, Phillips, Santner, Nathan Smith, Kyle Jamieson, Jacob Duffy, Blair Tickner, with Bracewell, Henry and Fisher on the bench.

Fisher's change is about squad depth, not about the XI in Auckland. He is there if a seamer is injured, or if the pitch helps seamers in Wellington or Hamilton.

What changes for the XI, first three vs last two

First three ODIs, 4, 7 and 10 November, updated squad of 15: Santner (captain), Bracewell, Conway, Duffy, Fisher, Henry, Jamieson, Latham (wicketkeeper), Mitchell, Nicholls, Phillips, Seifert (wicketkeeper), Smith, Young, Tickner.

In the 1st ODI, Conway was out with concussion, after colliding with Henry in fielding drills at Eden Park on 3 November, and Seifert replaced him as opener. Henry was benched, despite being cleared after concussion tests, and Bracewell was also benched.

If Conway is fit for Wellington on 7 November, subject to medical assessment, New Zealand's XI could be Conway and Seifert opening, with Young at No. 3, or Seifert and Young opening, with Conway at No. 3, and Nicholls at No. 4. That is a decision Santner will make at the toss.

Last two ODIs, 13 and 15 November, updated squad of 13: Santner (captain), Allen, Bracewell, Clarke, Duffy, Fisher, Foxcroft, Ferguson, Hay (wicketkeeper), Kelly, Seifert (wicketkeeper), Tickner, Young.

In the last two ODIs, Conway, Mitchell, Latham, Phillips, Nicholls, Jamieson, Smith and Henry are all out, because they are in the first-three squad only. Allen, Foxcroft, Ferguson, Hay, Kelly and Clarke are in, with Seifert, Bracewell, Duffy, Fisher, Tickner and Young staying.

Seifert is the only batter who is in for all five ODIs, as a keeper-batter. He will be the constant in New Zealand's XI, while the rest of the team changes around him.

What to watch in Wellington and Hamilton

Wellington, 7 November: Watch whether Conway is fit, and whether Seifert opens with Conway or with Young. Watch whether Nicholls bats at No. 3 again, or whether he moves down to No. 4. Watch whether Henry plays, after being benched in Auckland.

Hamilton, 10 November: Watch whether Seifert can score more quickly at Seddon Park, where the ODI first-innings average is 245.0, and par is 245 to 265. Seifert's T20 form at Seddon Park, 93 off 50 in Hamilton on 1 November, was excellent, but that was a T20I. In an ODI, Seifert will need to bat longer.

Bay Oval, 13 and 15 November: Watch Seifert as the senior batter in a younger squad, with Allen, Foxcroft and Kelly in, and Mitchell, Latham and Phillips out. Seifert will need to lead the batting, as the only batter who has played all five ODIs.

For fans, Seifert is the player to watch in the ODI series, because he is the replacement who is in for all five ODIs. Verdict

Seifert replacing Ravindra and Chapman is not a one-for-one swap. It is a squad reshuffle, with Seifert in for all five ODIs, Nicholls in for the first three, Foxcroft in for the last two, and Fisher in for the whole series.

Seifert changes New Zealand's XI as an opener, as a second keeper, and as a quick scorer, but he is right-handed, not left-handed, and he is not a spin option like Ravindra, or a middle-order power-hitter like Chapman.

New Zealand's XI in Auckland was more right-handed, with Seifert opening and top-scoring with 38, and with Nicholls at No. 3. In Wellington and Hamilton, Santner will need to decide whether Conway returns, and where Seifert bats.

Seifert is the constant in New Zealand's ODI squad, in for all five ODIs. The rest of the team changes around him.
